What is Naturopathic Dermatology?

Naturopathic Dermatology

OVERVIEW OF NATUROPATHIC MEDICINE

Naturopathic medicine is an integrative medicine that focuses on addressing the whole person and treating the root cause of disease. The human body has the innate ability to heal itself when given the right environment to do so. Naturopathic doctors help identify any obstacles to cure and empower individuals with the tools and resources necessary for success on their journey back to optimal health and wellness.

Naturopathic doctors are trained and educated at one of the five accredited naturopathic medical schools in North America after obtaining at least a bachelor’s degree and completing the necessary pre-requisite coursework. After passing board examinations for licensure, naturopathic doctors either go on to do a residency program (which is currently optional except for in the state of Utah), work for a doctor at an established practice, or start their own practice either by themselves or with another medical professional.

Once in practice, naturopathic doctors can choose to specialize or focus on a specific modality, body system, or demographic. I’ve personally decided to specialize in naturopathic dermatology.

WHAT IS NATUROPATHIC DERMATOLOGY?

Naturopathic dermatology uses a holistic approach to treat and manage skin conditions. The skin is a reflection of inner health, and if something is off-balance inside then it can show through the skin on the outside. This is why it’s important to address the underlying cause of a skin condition rather than only treat the symptoms. My approach to treating skin conditions includes the use of natural therapies such as botanical medicine and high-quality supplements in addition to lifestyle modifications.

While seeing a naturopathic doctor can be a great help to your skin, it’s also important to note that a naturopathic doctor does not replace an esthetician or a board-certified dermatologist. Each provider plays a key role in maintaining and optimizing the health of your skin.

SKIN CONDITIONS TREATED

There are many skin, hair, and nail conditions that can be treated with naturopathic medicine. I personally offer treatments for the following dermatologic conditions:

  • Acne
  • Eczema
  • Psoriasis
  • Rosacea
  • Urticaria (hives)
  • Warts
  • Fungal skin infections
  • Contact dermatitis
  • Hair loss or thinning
